Buffet Kull
Dinner on Tuesday was slightly more spectacular again. My mum and I went to Buffet Kull, a small restaurant in the old part of the city centre that, although it is quite posh, I like very much. The atmosphere is a lot more relaxed than usual in Munich; it's definitely not a place you go to see and be seen, but one to enjoy a good meal in good company. The acoustics of the dining room are very bad - at dinnertime you virtually have to shout at each other - but the quality of the food and service more than make up for that. The waiting staff are fast and attentive without being intrusive or pushy and, more importantly, they are always friendly and do everything to make you feel welcome. You are undecided? Just ask and they will help you find the perfect dish for your mood. You want to change a side dish? Not a problem, they'll arrange it for you. Need more to drink? The menu? Or the bill? Just nod your head in their direction and you will get it.
The food is equally delightful. I normally start
with their half dozen oysters with shallot vinaigrette and pumpernickel bread, which have so far always been excellent. This time, though, I skipped the starter in favour of a desert. Since I have moved to Dublin I have an ample supply of very good, ultra fresh and reasonably prices oysters at Temple Bar Market, so why would I order expensive ones in a city that is as far from the sea as you can get in Europe and will therefore always supply less fresh (albeit in this case almost equally good) ones? My mum had some French onion soup, which was nice, but the
one I made last week and left for Lofty to eat while I was gone was better. (Sorry for the lack of a recipe, it will follow next time I make it.) The main courses were excellent, though. My mum had a fish filet in a creamy sauce with mashed potatoes. She normally orders steak with chips and béarnaise sauce, but somehow yesterday's dinner must have inspired her. I opted for organic Tandoori chicken, which was anything but Indian, but very tasty. It came with rich, slightly spicy gravy and creamy mashed potatoes. I could have done with less meat and some vegetables on the side, but I was happy this way too. The desert menu is relatively small and quite simple: crème brulée, tarte tatin, one or two things I don't even remember and a wonderful chocolate tart. Which is exactly what I had. The perfect end to a perfect evening.Christine at 9:38 pm
